Construction and maintenance update August 2024

Westhaven Seawall Upgrade progress update

The upgrade to the seawall along Westhaven's northern reclamation began in early March under the guidance of Eke Panuku. This project aims to address the challenges posed by adverse weather events and king tides, which have led to significant inundation in the area.

Current construction status:

Progress is being made in phases. John Fillmore Contracting (JFC) has completed underground utilities ducting and drainage works in the area. They have also recently finished the concrete portion of the seawall reconstruction. While work on the stone component of the wall is underway, it is not yet fully installed.

Next, JFC will construct tree pits in the area between Beacon Marine and Richmond Yacht Club, followed by the footpaths, which are expected to begin in late September or early October.

The project is anticipated to be completed by March 2025.

Traffic management:

To ensure the safety of work crews, pedestrians, and motorists, temporary traffic management measures have been implemented, including a 10km/h speed limit. Westhaven Drive has been reduced to a single lane, with two-way traffic regulated by a traffic light system. Due to the complexity of traffic flow, ongoing adjustments are being made to optimise traffic management. Please note that the traffic lights operate on sensors, so vehicles need to stop close to the lights for detection.

We appreciate your patience during these improvement efforts.

Fire alarm system upgrade

We are pleased to advise that the upgrade to our fire alarm system on the piers is now complete.

The upgrade includes additional sirens for improved coverage across the marina, modern stainless steel call points, and updated fire panels that provide precise activation locations to staff and emergency services.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this project.

Maintenance

In addition to our regular maintenance schedule, the following tasks have recently been completed or are currently underway:

Pier gangways update: Following on from our previous newsletter, we’re making good progress on the safety panel modifications to the pier gangways (refer to the image below). The work at Viaduct Marina is now complete, and we will soon begin upgrades on the Westhaven gangways. While most piers have multiple gangways and will remain accessible during the work, there are a few, including T, U, V, W, X and Y, that only have a single gangway. For these piers, access will need to be restricted at times, particularly during activities such as welding. Please rest assured that these disruptions will be kept to a minimum. We will provide as much advance notice as possible and work closely with you to ensure you can still access your boat. During restricted access periods, our boats will be available to help you get where you need to go.

Pier refurbishment: Refurbishment work on N and P pier’s floating structures is now complete. We are currently progressing through Q pier, with enhancements to A pier next on the agenda. Simultaneously, we are replacing degraded piles on X pier, with P, Q and U piers scheduled next.

The replacement of K pier is set to begin shortly. This project will involve disassembling the existing pier and constructing a new one in the same configuration. Contractors will be on-site starting 9 September 2024, and we expect the replacement to take approximately four months to complete.

Following the completion of K pier, our next priority will be the replacement of L pier, which is scheduled to commence early in 2025. We will provide an update about the status of L pier closer to the time.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to develop our marina facilities.
