Auckland Dragon Boat Association Super Series Regatta Finale at Westhaven Marina
Westhaven Marina came alive on Sunday 11 August, as the Auckland Dragon Boat Association concluded its winter series with the exhilarating finale of the Auckland Super 10 Series. The event saw 14 teams – 11 from Auckland and three from Waikato – gather at the marina for a day of intense competition in ideal weather conditions.
The highlight of the regatta was the 200-metre sprint races, where teams of ten paddlers demonstrated their speed and teamwork. The competition was fierce, with two heats leading into an electrifying final. The Lion Dragon Boat Club delivered an outstanding performance, clocking the fastest time of the day at 58.27 seconds in the grand final. The women’s grand final was equally thrilling, with less than half a second separating the top three teams.
The excitement didn’t stop there. The regatta also featured a challenging 1-kilometre turns race, where teams combined to form larger crews of up to 20 paddlers. This race added an extra layer of excitement, fostering camaraderie as participants connected and teamed up with new faces. The event showcased the community spirit that is at the heart of dragon boating.
Among the seven mixed teams and seven women’s teams competing, two breast cancer survivor teams brought an inspiring presence to the event. A standout moment was the debut of the Steel Stars, a junior squad from the Steel Dragons, who competed admirably in the Minor Mixed Final and earned enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.
Spectators along the Westhaven Marina boardwalk were treated to the sight of dragon boats gliding through the water, powered by the rhythmic beat of drums. The regatta turned the marina into a vibrant hub, drawing in those enjoying an afternoon stroll.
The Auckland Super 10 Series once again proved that dragon boating is more than just a sport – it’s a celebration of teamwork, athleticism and community spirit. The event brought together teams, families and onlookers for a memorable day on the water.
